It gets more interesting if you want both numbers in the booking, for example you want to use the AA Platinum status for advance seat selection but earn BA miles. This is theoretically possible, but by all accounts often goes a bit wrong.
In my experience as soon as you let your BA number get into the booking it won't let go easy. I changed from my BA number to my AA number at checkin once and the BP printed with the AA number on it. The miles were still credited to my BA account.
