My source are relatives who are long-time Hildesheim residents.

The difference between Hildesheim and many other places is that those other places rebuilt their old buildings as soon as they could (mostly in the 1950s/60s) whereas Hildesheim replaced the old buildings by something different and then knocked down the new buildings and reconstructed the old buildings many years later.

(And it was Wikipedia that used the word "replicas", BTW)
