hyderago, you're right. I've just received a reply from Kenya Airways:

"Dear Yeong,
Thank you for choosing to fly Kenya Airways.
In Nairobi you will check-in only for KQ to Mumbai then in Mumbai you check-in again for Singapore Airlines hence cannot check the luggage through

Seems like I'll have to clear customs and re-check in at the SQ counter. Entering India means that I'll have to get an Indian Visa. oh my...
