Vaguely OT Kingfisher Airlines comparison
Just been doing a few flights to/from/in India, BA's partial codeshare partner and soon-to-be OW fellow member.
Flying Y the flight from London to Delhi no problem with our slightly over-23kg bag and 86kg luggage between 4 pax, flight itself was an A330 with full aVOD (poor game selection however, and relatively clunky navigation between movies), large seatback screen and very comfortable seats with good width and seatpitch, cabin looks very bright and attractive. Seats have a nice water bottle holder with each seat having a water bottle in place (not something BA offers in economy). Most people are opting for the Indian meal, which was only ok. Service is very good, I asked a passing crew member for another beer and he said 'It will be in about 10 minutes, is that ok?', I say 'yes' and sure enough 10 minutes later I was given one.
The local flight was a low-cost subsidiary on an AT7 (turboprop) with food and drink for sale on board but luggage allowance included.
Delhi-Bangkok was on a 1-class A319. Officially this is 31" seat pitch versus 32" on the A330, whatever way it felt much less comfortable. Seat-back screens, smaller, with only about 4 channels. We arrived at thee airport at about 12:20 for the 1:30am 4-hour flight (cutting it fine) and Kingfisher staff personally escorted us to the fastest immigration queue and then towards the gate.
On board we were served a hot meal shortly after take-off (slightly tastier than ex-LHR but actually not as good as the food we got on the train) with drinks and then after about 15 minutes they do another drinks round. 'Whisky, vodka, wine, beer' is the offer - quite hard stuff by Indian standards; the two Indian men opposite me wave their glasses at a passing stewardess 'More whisky eh'.
With about an hour to landing we hit some monsoon turbulence over Burma and the pilot announces 'Crew take your seats'. The turbulence continues for about 40 minutes but after about 10 minutes people start going to the toilet and the crew seem to acquiesce to this, which I'm sure would not happen on BA. Other things are overlooked a little I think too - the girl in front of me reclines her seat before take-off (although by Indian standards I think this is not so bad - the man next to me on the train decides to use my seatback for his water bottle and to stretch his legs into my legroom. Not much personal space here.
My wife notes all the crew seem to want to serve the customer, which she thinks is not always evident on BA (my wife comes from a country where to have a job is something to be grateful for and if you are not happy to do it there are 10 other people who would be - sentiments applicable I am sure in India). The desire not to inconvenience is almost excessive, on landing people are told immediately that they can turn on their phones (but not get up). Of course this is not specific to Kingfisher in India by any means. Service culture is an Indian thing I guess - the Levis outlet I go to in Agra brings me pairs of jeans after looking at me and saying (correctly) 'this will be your size' and then 'we can have them tailored for you' etc., and waits while I try them on before offering opinion. In my local Debenhams if I want to try on a pair of Levis the staff regard it as a major imposition to open up the changing room and are very surly as they do have to stand and wait for store security reasons, and they make it plain that they are not happy to do so....
Kingfisher is of course rated higher than BA by skytrax, and I would say that is a fair assessment.
I believe Kingfisher are supposed to be a current redemption partner but I can't find them on the online booking. Seems like a decent use of miles anyway depending on fees.
