Comensation? 6hr delay because of 2 cancellations

Hi all,

yesterday I was coming into EWR in C class with Lufthansa from Dusseldorf at 2.40pm, connecting to DCA on CO2221, scheduled at 5.15pm.
The plane came at 6.05pm from Jacksonville and my CO2221 was cancelled the moment the plane arrived at the gate.
I was then rebooked on CO2222, scheduled at 7.45pm, which was also cancelled when the inbound arrived at 7.58pm.

Finally, I was rebooked again on CO2977 scheduled to depart at 9.47pm, which was also delayed until 11.43pm. I arrived in DCA at 12.40AM the next day which is 6hrs later than supposed to be.
Of course the luggage didn't make it and the rental car station was already closed.

What's wrong with CO at EWR? Don't they have spare planes at their main hub? Why always waiting on the incoming/scheduled prior flight?
At the airport they were not willing to give any compensation as cancellations where supposed to be due to weather (which was fine by the way).

What's the procedure to claim compensation for the circumstances but also extra costs I had?

Thanks
