It may not be near your seat, but you won't be required to gate check. If you are really worried, call the airline and ask them what options they have for priority boarding. Most that I've dealt with have some sort of (relatively cheap) option to upgrade your boarding status.
i speak to AA, which last time i couple times i flew out of DFW if you are on an MD80 , the first 99 get luggage. the last 36 to 40 do not. that means after all the first class and all the elites, there is no room for luggage storage. i think that so far this year, i have done dfw-dca on a monday morning AA 5 times. never was able to get my luggage on board.
OP is 2x people. most priority boarding is $25. will cost him $100 to get his luggage on board.
