The various rules for award travel are so confusing.

Anyway, I have a good amount of AA miles (about 250k) and I'm thinking of booking a trip to asia. I'd like to make the best use of my miles as possible and I'd like to fly business class if possible.

I'm thinking of a trip like:

LAX-ICN-Beijing-Shanghai-ICN-LAX

I believe that on Delta this would count as a single round trip ticket with 2 stopovers (beijing and shanghai).

1) How does this work on AA? Would this be additional miles? If so, I can take shanghai out of the trip and it's not a big deal.
2) Does AA fly to ICN? If so, how? Do I need to fly through NRT? I don't see Asiana as a partner anymore so I guess that's out? There's no way for me to fly to Korea nonstop I guess?

Any recommendations on how to set up this itinerary?

My other option is to just use my delta miles and go korean air and the skyteam alliance but i don't have any many miles over there so i'd prefer to use AA if possible.
Funny you are asking this, because I am in the same situation. I'm planning on going to Seoul sometime in November.

I actually called AA yesterday to find out what I need to do.

AA does not have a direct flight to ICN. Quickest possible route there is LAX-NRT-ICN. This counts as one award flight. If you want to fly business, it would cost you 50k miles each way since ICN is still considered Asia Zone 1.

If you want to go to China, it would cost you an extra 20k miles each way from ICN since you will be traveling from Asia Zone 1 to Asia Zone 2.

Hope that answers your question.
