My information is slightly outdated since I've taken to flying out of MKE because of the grief that ORD causes. (I get some extra miles to boot!) The TSOs at MKE don't have the ORD attitude, and it's easy to do a self-directed opt-out. I've never had to opt-out at MKE even with the MMW running, and I'm sure they'd have no extra choice remarks if someone did opt-out. The Plat/EXP checkpoint has particularly high probability that you'll face the backscatter, especially as a female traveling alone.
I've not yet had to opt-out at ORD, but there have been a few close calls. I imagine as a female traveling alone you couldn't do the tricks some of us employ like fumbling with our carry-ons or ushering people to move ahead of you as you "search" for your kippie bag to remove.
