Should have hung up on the call center and tried again. In my experience, SLC and Chisholm (MN) call centers are the best (and most polite). Also, if you're not too time constrained, perhaps you should take a detour and follow the spouse for more miles via ATL. Afterall, the revenue ticket can be changed easier than the award ticket. You'll be surprized how the Diamond desk agents can waive all sorts of fees and bend a lot of rules.
