Not rude, just catering to the majority. Most of those you described are not road warriors that utilize either tool---or are even aware of them. Not likely to be on standby either.
Once again, those who care enough about it, empower themselves with the travel tools (or food, toys for kids, entertainment etc) needed for their style of flying. (Yes, there are exceptions.)
It's kind of like the decaf coffee going to instant: we would literally serve one cup of decaf every 4 or so flights, if that---I'm not exaggerating. So CO decided not to carry around fresh ground decaf that was brewed and disposed of every flight for an
extremely small percentage of their clientele. Too few were enjoying the benefit to justify the significant cost. Almost everyone drank regular.
Of the flying public, the majority are connected. Take a look around the next time you're at the gate---nothing but heads buried in smart phones.
It would be nice to have both but I don't think the cost could be justified, especially considering that 99% of phones will be connected, probably sooner than later. Non-smart phones are going the way of dial-up.
What they
should do is advertize the PDA site at every gate because admittedly, not everyone with a data phone is aware of it.
