You don't say which airline so this is pretty general. The one thing that jumps out of your OP is the word "carry-ons." The rule is generally 1 carry-on plus 1 small personal item and several domestic airlines are getting pretty strict about the letter of the law in that regard. If you have more than one full-sized rollaboard or carry-on bag, I'd bet on being required to check one.
