I could not agree more. Going to Hamburg or even Copenhagen appears to be a silly idea. I would however rent a car and travel through the Harz mountains. The drive itself is pretty nice and allows for several stops en route. Wonderful little market towns and if one wants to be in a slightly bigger place, Magdeburg is close by and gives evidence how ugly East German architecture had been.
