Both DFW and JFK are easier to find seats to SYD. Sometimes you can find JFK-LAX-SYD but you would not find LAX-SYD (or BNE or MEL) because of QF's married segment which is to ensure folks from East Coast also have a shot on the award seats.
Yeah, I had read that in another thread. Being in DC, we'd be okay with any of those, as far as getting there or back, even splitting up if necessary.
LAX is the hardest on both directions.
It may boil down to just where you can find the J or F seats to go instead of basing on where you prefer your stopover.
Yeah, it might come down to that. My 14-year-old daughter, though, REALLLLY wants to spend some time in Southern California (we don't make trips often, so I think she sees this as her big chance to do everything), and it wouldn't be easy for Dad to tell his little girl that we couldn't after we talked about doing just that. Particular if the reason was "The mean ole airline won't let us get seats."
