Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear - yes, as you suspected I do know that I can stop going either way, I was just looking to see if anyone had a sense of whether it would make a difference in being able to get flights. Since they seem to be VERY limited and go fast, we'd be looking to book the flight over well before the return flights were available, so knowing which end the stopover was on would be helpful. I also realize that the answer might be, "It doesn't matter, because it is equally hard either way", but I had to ask to be sure.
edit to add....the answer to your title ? is the direction that has award availability.....btw, whats your date range?
Yes, but having to book the outgoing flight weeks in advance of the return makes it important to decide which end to do things. If it were likely to be easier to find awards from Australia to the US through LAX, for example, we could expand our search for outgoing flights to those going through JFK or DFW.
As for dates, being how far in advance we are planning things, it is fairly wide open. Earliest departure from DC would be June 16, latest return to DC August 25th (with neither being optimal, you understand). Probably looking at something between 3-4 weeks total, including the LA time.
