No question that is a possibility, but you overlook the other aspect. It is detante. If one airline eliminated it, they would be at a competitive disadvantage. Ever wonder why the airline programs in any given geopgraphic region are similar? It isn't they have found a "break even point" it is that they have matche dthe other airline to remain competitive. Perhaps it is a "win/win", but perhaps it is a "lose least" scenerio.
