You shouldn't proceed. You should take a deep breath and realize that different cultures have different laws, different priorities, and different risk tolerances. The family and the FA probably assumed you were just trying to poach their good seats, and treated you with appropriate scorn.

Since the flight did not originate in the US, the child was not properly screened (by the TSA) and therefore was most likely a terrorist. Terrorist children covet the exit-row since they are unquestionably the most sinister of seats on the airplane. Also, the child was not English-speaking, and may not have been able to pronounce his name such that an English-speaking TDC would be able to ascertain whether the child knew how to pronounce his own name.
