Surprised to hear this as amazon customer service has notoriously solid reputation [and from my own experiences]. If it was a authorized retail outlet and the kindle was properly registered [that is key], there would be no problems getting service, warranty, exchange, trouble shooting, etc.
Extended warranty is a personal cost/benefit choice - by the time yours is 1 year old, something better and/or same model for less price will be available.
