the fact is, any gate agent at any airline treats on time as God. If on time is jeapordized by going back into the system, looking for the next eligible upgrade, and offloading/reonloading them from y to f - then guess what, they wont be. A last minute runup y passenger (who almost just misconnected) can be thrown in business or first, making your upgrade null. logic being, on time departure is God, and everybody would be effected by pushing on time departure for your one upgrade.

and the FIS displays were long overdue at Co. other competitors, ua included, did it long before. they were faf behind the curve, using wowefully outdated led ticket displays...those can't show live upgrade/standby/cleared lists w/ seats rrmaining, which oh by the way, keeps gates agents from committing any "sheneniganz", acting as the number one deterrent. That has everything to do with the outrage bring expressed in this thread.
