I've bought split tickets from QF -- by phone -- a fair while ago (circa 2005?) ... it sticks in my memory as it was an involuntary downgrade (class sold out in one direction), and it was a single paper ticket on QF stock. So they used to be able to do it (though maybe all the changes rolled into e-ticketing killed it?).
