Service still hit or miss

We had a pleasant stay at the Park Hyatt Chicago this weekend (our 5th stay in 2 years). Upon check-in, we were offered a Park View room without any prompting from us when they noticed that we had been assigned a standard room.

The renovated NoMI Lounge and Kitchen look great and feature the kind of contemporary decor that we associate with the brand. We do miss the old NoMI menu, though.

As always we appreciated the very generous Diamond amenity (cheese plate plus a full bottle of wine), but once more felt that this property isn't quite living up to Park Hyatt expectations:

- Service has improved, especially at the renovated NoMI Lounge (although we still had to wait for over 10 minutes before we were helped by a server and another 10 to receive water). However, staff didn't really make an effort to address us by name or to anticipate needs, whether in the restaurant or elsewhere during our stay.
- Our room service order arrived late, and only after inquiring by phone, even though we had given them 90 minute advance notice
- Our room didn't have a complete set of towels
- We received the wrong morning paper, even though we were given a choice at check-in
- NoMI waitstaff wore pins with what appeared to be messages threatening a strike
- the Diamond amenity was not mentioned at check-in and we had to request it separately

While all of these are minor issues, they were noticeable and should not really happen at a property that charges nightly rates close to the Peninsula or Four Seasons nearby. I did hear that the GM from the Park Hyatt DC (one of my favorite Hyatt properties) will be leading this hotel soon, which might be a really good thing ^

Overall, this is a good Hyatt property with a great location, but more like a Grand Hyatt with oversize bathrooms than a true Park Hyatt such as DC, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hamburg. It is a good redemption opportunity for GP points, but perhaps somewhat overpriced on revenue rates.
