Not that hard at all.
Ive had gotten my hair cut a few times during lengthy travels. A few times the barbers did not quite understand what I was trying to tell them and I got a very "local" looking hairstyle.
But then again Im a dude and I dont mind a buzz cut so if it doesnt work out for me I show up at another shop and get a buzz cut. Its very easy to explain a buzz cut with simple gestures. Point at the clippers and then pretend you are running them over your head, a lot of barbers understand that.
