Second suggestion: Introduce an "AAnytime" or "Standard" award tier available to everyone.

If you want to double up on points, you should be able to get any open seat on the plane. See AA's and UA's program for details.

Again, benefits AC/AP on reducing AP accrued mileage liability, benefits customers if they need last minute travel, or if they have more miles than they know what to do with.
