Hey, haven't heard from you in a while! I had been watching the fares to London around this time and they'd been about $100 higher, then just before I booked they shot up substantially. I had pretty much abandoned the idea of going when a $299 USD fare appeared in the little box with the 3 web specials on the AA home page. I clicked on it and most of the options priced higher, but this one came in at around $450 USD including taxes (and you what taxes are from here). I grabbed it and it locked in with an L class fare (something like LWEBCARE00...) and N class on the return. I called and was told that the outgoing was not eligible for upgrade, but was waitlisted for the return. Then I screwed myself with some help from AA - they changed the return to a misconnect in DFW. When I contacted them to sort it out, the very helpful AAgent said "I can save you some money too". In fixing the misconnect she changed the return to the same fare basis. I knew she was changing it to L and said I was worried about losing my upgrade. She said I would be fine and changing back to N would cost $300 per ticket more. That would have made the weekend too expensive. The upgrade did clear while I was in London, but when they went to process it at LGW they confirmed my worst fears - same fare class as the outgoing, no upgrade. As it turned out seats 31 H&J were just fine for the price, which in the end was $372.80 USD, taxes included.
