I'm not sure that any other airline would have done better. These sort of delays and cancellations can happen to anyone on any airline, and I wouldn't go assuming that anyone else would have handled it better.
Also, did you ask Delta to reimburse your ticket after you got home? They are often much more reasonable then when you get away from the GAs and other staff who have many things going on around them. As you have found out, things get chaotic pretty easily, and someone is much more likely to listen and help you if you wait until it's over (or online, where they can work at their own pace).
