I should add that it's not really an "aid" to me in normal usage - I use them going up and down Munroes in Scotland mostly. If I can take them on board it means I'll be hand-luggage only.
When you have one, it's a stick. If they're a pair, they're poles.

I've seen people try to carry hurleys onto Aer Lingus flights, and they wound up in the baggage hold. (The hurleys, not the people.)
