Not that I like staying in hotels with large tour groups, but what do you expect from a tourist city like Chiang Mai ? Its not as if its the financial capital of SE Asia with significant number of business travellers to fill the rooms.
Most of the Sheratons, Le Meridiens & Hiltons I usually stay at in SE Asia even have seperate lobbies for groups check-in, let alone white boards indicating their itineraries. The last time I stayed at the LM Chiang Mai, there was a large group from the US Army, I dont suppose you would complain about that as well ....
