A couple of questions:
Was your upgrade on UA metal after the change showing as Waitlisted?
Were you both on the same PNR? or separate PNRs?

On UA metal, priority is based on Status, Fare Code and then time of request. You change may have reset the time tie breaker but if you were waitlisted them Status and Fare code would have been the driver.


Appears you changed at 24 hours or so out. All the GS/1Ks/PPLat would have been ahead of you and all the 1Ps on higher fare codes would also. Your companion would have shared your status until you arrived at the gate -- so that would not have been an issue.

SJU-ORD on a Sunday on an A320?? Pretty busy route and only 12F seats. Higher elites with their companions could have just beat you out,
