Thanks for bringing back the memories. Tassie is my home state. Queenstown is a really depressing place as you said and worth driving through very quickly. I can’t work out why you stayed in Glenorchy as it is a suburb of Hobart and offers nothing apart from the usual suburban delights. I would have chosen a city hotel that would have given you a much better intro to the city. Hobart has many old buildings (yes still there unlike Sydney) and getting around is a breeze. The Oakford on Elizabeth Pier is a great location for a stay in Hobart, close to Salamanca, the city and most tourist places of note. A drive up to the summit of Mount Wellington is a must.

B&B’s are really the way to go in Tassie, especially in the smaller towns. You meet dedicated locals and get a real feel for the place. The west coast is ruggedly beautiful and wild and cold at any time. The east coast is something different again. It does take a bit more time but the beaches and scenery are equally if not more spectacular. Freycinet Peninsula (Wine Glass Bay) is perhaps the most beautiful beach in the world….shame the water is like ice for most of the year even if it is the middle of summer.
