Perhaps s/he has not tried all the competitive programmes. I for one give up on trying to find DL or Flying Poo awards on dates anywhere near my preferred dates, though until now AA do seem to have had better availability for me than DL, AF or KL.
Didn't get that impression as the OP appears to be travelling with the family from the UK to MIA?
I agree with the idea in principle, when there is no availability on a route or if I need exact dates, I would be willing to use more than 25,000 miles to upgrade, however in reality a 2 tier redemption rate tends to just result in less seats at the old rate, i.e a devaluation of miles
