I am also heading to Thailand in December/January during the holiday time and would love some recommendations. My vacation consists of about 17 days, flying into Phuket (not yet booked), and flying out of Hanoi, Vietname (already booked).

I am looking to spend about 6 days or so in the Southern beach areas. From talking to people and reading many of the forums it sounds like I might split the vacation between Khao Lak (Le Meridien or JW Marriott) and Krabi. Aside from the Sheraton Krabi, does anyone have any other recommendations on Krabi or Railay Beach? Not on a tight budget, want semi-nice accomodations and not interested in being close to a party night life.

Also if anyone has any "off the beaten path" recommendations for other smaller island hotels please advise. Only problem is that it is over Christmas and New Years and many hotels are already booked or have a minimum night stay policy.

Interested in day trips exploring Similan islands from Khao Lak, along with many islands from Krabi (Phi Phi Island, etc.). Unless anyone else can recommend a smaller island that they suggest staying at.

Also, any idea if it is easy getting from Khao Lak to Krabi and the length of time?
