1. I tried going to the website but got an error message saying something to this effect "due to the nature of your booking, your reservation cannot be changed online. Please call your local BA agent". I learned later that my itin of ORD-HKG-MNL-HKG-ORD cannot be booked and changed online.
2. Called BA again resigned to just paying the $70 change fee. First, I asked agent if they had a 24 hour grace period for cancellations/ changes since I only booked the award this morning. Agent politely told me that it only applies to revenue bookings but not on awards. I said ok, it looks like I'll have to pay for my own stupid mistake and let's go ahead with the change. I was put on-hold for about 10 minutes, when the agent cameback, he has made the changes I requested and was happy to report that he was able to waive the $70 change fee. He did mention that any further changes down the line will result in a fee. I thanked him profusely then confirmed online that the changes made were correct, and they were!
Lessons learned:
- Be very careful with BA award booking dates next time.
- Agents have the ability to waive fees if you're not pushy and you get a nice agent. As always YMMV.
