To expand on what others have said, the waitlist at checkin only reflects those who have checked in. Culturally, we AS elites are early check in types due to our broken upgrade system. Since Delta requires no such compulsiveness, elite travelers have no motivation to check in ASAP and check in whenever it's convenient, thus the list grows after the 24 hour mark, and sometimes considerably.

Agree with
beckoa - I think it is more just to DL elites that all AS elites fall behind all DL elites for upgrades on DL, and all AS elites should trump all DL elites for upgrades on AS. If you value higher priority on DL, then you would want to be an elite member of their program.
Free baggage, priority security lines, priority seating, and chance at an upgrade at all seem like a reasonable reciprocal elite partnership - obviously this is going to cause you to choose DL over American any day, at least for most of us...
