This morning, the fitness center closed. No notice. I was actually inside at the time. Someone came, hung a sign and locked the door. When I checked in, I’d asked and been assured “no closing during your stay”. As things turned out, some construction schedule was accelerated, and… I rather wish there had been more advance notice. Guests are now given passes to a 24-Hour Fitness a couple of blocks away.

This was my final “bummer” with the property, and my three-week stay shrunk to eight nights. The other “bummers” were pretty minor and personal-to-me, but I’ll share anyway.

The staff in the Lounge was nice, but never seemed to appreciate that I visiting for work – and working 16-hour days – so I wasn’t in a vacation frame of mind. No need to have a luau booked, and limited time to enjoy a piece of breakfast fruit…while reading the Journal.

The lounge furniture is low to the ground, and adheres strongly to the floor under force of gravity. I’m tall and don’t tend to walk around staring at my feet. So I stubbed many toes, barked many shins and “hit the deck” a couple of times. (This isn’t “usual” behavior for me.)

Lounge drinks seemed pretty reasonably priced. I think beer was $4. I don’t drink, but it’s tough to get a soda for $4 nearby. Food offerings didn’t change much (other than the nightly “entrée” and dessert). Coffee from the machine was tolerable, but brewed coffee – seen only one morning – was better.

A few positives: green/lettuce salad at breakfast, along with a lot of interesting looking pastries, meats and such. (I’m vegetarian, but that doesn’t keep me from admiring, even if I don’t partake.) The lounge never got really crowded, though I sensed that hotel occupancy was never high.

Positives/Negatives, depending on your perspective: lots of kids in the lounge.

What you have written about is now becoming more the norm than not. The hotel is changing to more inline with the Asian hotels with many of the club rooms offering less and less. The decorum is fast disappearing with the families allowing their kids to run a mock, using their hands and fingers in the food. The staff for whatever reason is reluctant to talk to the parents.

As for the Mark and Cory show I am one that thinks that got out of hand at times. Never the less their service help make the Hyatt a very popular stop for many of us businessmen, and women.

The food and beverage offerings are limited in nature and expensive. Like the Hilton Hawaiian many guest op to go out to local eateries, which is great for the locals.

Don't get me wrong, I am a Diamond and long time loyal Hyatt guest, but think that maybe they should step back and look at their guests needs and wants a little better.
