View-with-a-room, do you mean an international plan with my US wireless carrier, or a sim card in Europe? I have international with my carrier now, but I will add roaming. I've pre-purchased train tickets, including from FCO. We are traveling by train from Rome to Edinburgh, with stops in between. I think the prices were high, but that was mostly due to a sleeper train from Venice to Paris. That train required point-to-point, so rail pass benefits were negated. Also, since our traveling companion is European, she could not buy a rail pass. I didn't want the hassle of trying to buy a separate European pass.
