Are you sure? I remember there was a case where the pax was booked on AAA-BBB-CCC where AAA-BBB was intra-european and BBB-CCC was a transatlantic segment. AAA-BBB was cancelled, pax was rebooked and arrived at CCC more than 6 hours later. The airline (LH IIRC) in this case wanted to pay 250 EUR (AAA-BBB) even though the pax had a total delay of 6 hours from AAA to CCC via BBB. In the end a court ruled that LH had to pay 600 EUR since the trip was from AAA to CCC.
