Its likely that your miles either hadn't expired, or had just expired and they gave you a break because you had a decent sized balance with the account created by the Visa bonus.
I believe, that is why I said, "I could be completely wrong and crazy here and perhaps the miles never did expire" right after my claim. So perhaps you are right missydarlin. Nonetheless, I'm just explaining my experience in the hopes that it may work for someone else too.
