I used to get 1 point for every Southwest flight, now I get 2,000!!!!

That illustrates the problem with looking at "points". What you need to be looking at is earning award ratios. How many nights do you need to stay, on average, in a hotel at a certain price/level to earn a free night at that same level (or at another level depending on your patterns - I look at earning at mid-scale full service properties for business and redeeming at resorts for family vacations).

I haven't done the math in a while, but factoring in long-term averages for bonuses/promotions, taking advantage of 5th free nights, etc., I found that both programs were in the 10-12 paid nights per earned free night range.

MR was a bit better in the award ratio but SPG had the advantage that you can almost always redeem an award night when there is a night available - real "no blackout" vs. the MR "no blackout but limited inventory" approach.

If your goal is pure points, MR is better (I have 1.1M MR but only 400K SPG), but redemption power is what you should look at (I can get roughly 40 vacation-level nights with each).

As pointed out above, you would need to do the analysis factoring in your own stay/redemption levels, stay durations (PLT bonus is much better at SPG and means more with 1-night average stays vs. 4 night average stays), your elite level, etc., etc. No one program is "better" for everyone.
