I have cancelled 2 reward stays recently. One on the website which took days and some chasing up to get the points back into my account. The 2nd cancelled over the phone and these points were back in my account within minutes.
As previously said no more reward certificates, all done electronically now.
This has been my experience as well. I will always call to cancel an award reservation from now on. I won't do it on-line.
