Is any state better than another for picking up a rental in terms of fees & taxes? Ideally I will be dropping it back at JFK before flying out to LAX. I've rented from Hertz before, but I dont know if they are good/bad/indifferent for a small car rental compared to others.

Any gotchas I need to be aware of?

Thanks
Will you be renting a car immediately upon arrival in NYC, or sometime later? I've found that renting from Hertz or Avis locations in Western Nassau County (Hertz in Inwood or New Hyde Park, Avis in New Hyde Park or Rockville Centre or Manhasset) can be reasonably priced, even if you drop the car at JFK at the end of the rental. And they will -- with pre-arrangement -- pick you up from nearby Long Island Rail Road stations.
