SFO-LAX-PHX on a single flight number is direct. Non-stop, no, but "direct" in marketing speak, yes. (OK, probably uncalled for snark, but really I'm poking at DL's stupid use of "direct" flights and not your post, which contains a valid point with non-stop substituted for direct.)
