Unhappy How often do seats open up for rewards travel?

To start....I am more of a wannabe ff, so I am still learning FT lingo or how to ask the right questions so apologize in advance if this was listed somewhere and I didn't know where to find it.

We want to fly from PDX to GCM. Arrive 10/08/11, leave 10/15/11.

We have miles on Alaska (plus companion tix) and CO.

I can find reward travel with red eye on CO (well, on AS as well) but it usually involves a 10 hour layover....CO has flights PDX/GCM for 8 hours total travel time but I can't seem to get near that for reward travel.

I don't have enough points on CO for international travel (just bought pdx - bon tix with them!) but wanted to use the points.com program to try to sell/trade the alaska ones if I could get good flights on CO.

Any suggestions? Do I check CO's site every day seeing if they open more seats for a 14 hour or less travel time (vs the red eye 18 hour travel time I see today)?

As a trade for guidance on how to proceed...I work with Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) so if you or a family member needs time off work for a serious health condition, I can help guide you on what the doctor needs to say and what your employer can and can't do ^
