Travel from NYC to Genoa through CDG/FCO -- Schengen vs non-Schengen?

Hello all,

I hope that you can help me and that this is in the right place. Next month, I will be traveling to Genoa, with a connection on the way there through CDG, and on return through FCO. I was reading about the Schengen vs non-Schengen and just wondering, would I be considered a Schengen traveler during the time between the connecting flight and my final destination, and go through that sercurity or will it not matter as I am traveling with a US passport? I was thinking more for myself and for my one checked bag (if it is not forwarded directly to my final destination). Thank you all in advance!
