Recent reports (somewhere in another thread) indicated that after cancellation it is taking some time for points to go back.

Yes the points can be redeposited back to your account and there is no charge for that. You can also hold on to the reward certificate for later use, just be aware the certificate expires in a year. Don't seems see any advantage to hold on the certificate these days though.
No more reward certs now that things have gone paperless.
