Driving between London and Manchester, the direct route is congested and bland. However, there's always a scenic route around the corner - detours via the Chilterns, the Cotswolds, Herefordshire, the Peak District, Chester and the like are all possible, depending how far off-route you want to veer, and what you enjoy.
^ If you're willing to spend days getting to (and from ?) Manchester there are virtually limitless scenic alternatives. Going via Welsh Borders, back via the Peak District for example is just one (and just my preference).
