On your outbound journey you will have to collect your bags regardless to go through US Customs and Agriculture pre-clearance. My bet is that they will label your bags to YYZ only and the following morning you will need to re-check them and walk them through the inspection area and place them on the belt on the other side.

I don't know about the way back though doing an international to international connection.
