If you haven't done your flight yet, here's my reply. I live in Chicago, but have transited through ORD T5 too.
Here's the thing -
1. Make sure at FCO, that your bags are tagged all the way till DTW. It doesn't matter, but it saves time at ORD as you have to just drop your bags at the counters located immediately after exiting customs at T5. Once your bags are dropped, you can take the train and proceed to T3, from where AA operates.
2. If you'd like to change to an earlier flight (which I've done once), the people staffing the desk would be able to do so. They'll replace the baggage tag with a new one and then you can drop the bags there and proceed to T3.
