Edit: Never mind, after searching for a while longer, it loks like you can go via LHR but only certain days of the week. Like 3 days a week only. So from sfo to LHR then from Gaswick to MLE. How far is LHR to Gaswick airport?
Its an hour or so transfer via bus. The LGW-MLE flight is only thrice weekly.

Have you looked into Borneo at all, I suspect this is a far better option from SFO and supposedly similar, in accommodation options anyway. to the Maldives. This may be accessible via OW through QF and I suspect would allow that stopover in Oz!
