Wow, this is very generous. I was reading this thread and about to respond along the lines of what most here have done, which is take what's being given, the LH flight will have a cleaner aircraft and better food, and you probably would have had E+ on your UA flights.
You got $1,000 compensation for 8 hours delay for your family. Great! If I had been in your shoes and this was an offer made to me (independent of any delay issues) I would have taken it straight away!
