With very few exceptions (i.e. Neutrogena original formula soaps), I'm not a fan of hotel toiletries. That includes the minty stuff at Renaissance.
That said, I'll usually use whatever is in the room unless the stuff is really gross...which most often for me means anything that smells like apples or strawberries. For that reason I usually have a item or two of shampoo/lotion/soap with me.
BTW, I also agree that "toiletries" from my last couple of SHS stays is also pretty awful.
A few years' back, I was at a Ritz-Carlton, and they had some really outstanding classy round European shower and bath soaps in the room. Wonderful fragrance, lather, that left a very nice clean, fresh feeling after use. Bravo!
But a year later that had been replaced by some standard-issue junk which was more like what might be expected in a Days Inn. Don't know what they might have done the year after that. I haven't been back since.
