Always a sign of great customer service - blame the customer. I know it could just be a poor and hasty choice of words, but saying "I don't know what happened here, but..." is just as accurate and far less insulting.
The only question I would leave here is--does it normally take a few days for miles to be redeposited?

Well, redepositing miles on United is instantaneous. At least, it has been for me, as a UA 1K. The phone agents have refunded my miles instantly while I'm on the phone canceling the award. I fear this is another "change" I won't like if we're stuck with the CO reservations system.
I've always found it interesting how CO seems to remove miles and charge my credit card almost instantly yet it seems to take forever to do the opposite.... And it normally takes a phone call to the OPSC-- with wait times of 20+ minutes to a toll phone number -- to get it straightened out.
